On Thursday, Aug. 29, drama teacher Ms. Volpa held Improv Team auditions for the 2019-2020 school year in the Black Box Theater after school.
Improvisation, or Improv, is a form of live theater performance in which the plot, characters, and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up on the spur of the moment. Often improvisers will take a suggestion from the audience, or draw on some other source of inspiration to get started. Over 20 new faces came to show off their improvisational skills, have a chance to make to make the team, and to have a fun afternoon.
The applicants were split up into five groups, each led by a returning member of the team to introduce applicants to what the Improv Team has to offer. They played games like “New Choice,” where two players began a scene at the suggestion of the audience, and at any time the host can say, “New Choice,” the players had to alter the last phrase that had been spoken and build a new scene from there. Afterwards, they all made their way into the Black Box Theater to have even more fun in group games. AHS sophomore Sterling French, had this to say: “This is only my first year, but I can tell that this team and the future members of it are going to do so great.”
While Ms. Volpa is trying to recruit as many students as possible to get involved with the Improv Team, only six openings remained. After heavy consideration, AHS students Jacob Anderson, Sterling French, Julia Hurd, Coral Yost, Zanna Peterson, and Johnny Reyes filled the remaining spots on the 2019-2020 Improv Team. AHS senior Brendan Haydon said about this year’s new members, “They are all great! I believe that the Improv Team has a strong foundation for the next couple of years.”
