AHS drama students delivered Valentine’s grams, singing telegrams, on Feb. 14 during Study Hall as a fundraiser for their upcoming productions. Students had the opportunity to buy a Valentine’s gram for $1 from the Lit Club and from drama teacher Ms. Volpa. During Study Hall the drama students separated into two groups and delivered all of the singing telegrams to the students and teachers they were addressed to.

The songs that they performed were “Tell Me What You Want” by the Spice Girls, Barney’s theme song “I Love You,” Player’s “Baby Come Back,” and Queen’s “ Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Librarian Ms. Bell received a Valentine’s gram from library technician Ms. Gonzalez, and she loved it. “It was really cool; it made my day extra special. Plus I totally admire their courage and talent,” said Ms. Bell.

Performer Payton Raine, a junior, said, “I feel like I have an easy time performing for people I don’t know, but it’s harder to perform for people who I do know and family. I personally am not embarrassed when I do the Valentine’s grams because I love to perform and put smiles on peoples’ faces, whether they are laughing at me or with me. As long as they have a good time, it’s fun,” Raine added.

The drama department sold Valentine’s grams to pay back money that they borrowed to attend the Templeton Theatre Festival in January. The festival let each participating school have 20 minutes to perform on stage at the morning Scene Fest. There were nine schools involved in the festival, which brought theatre students from schools from all over the county to perform, entertain, and educate each other.

AHS’s drama department’s One Act Festival (this year’s spring production) will occur during the last weekend of March and the first weekend of April. The drama club will perform four different one-act comedy and drama plays where everything from the set, sound, lights, costumes, and props were designed by students.

Recent drama department events included an “Dime a Dozen” Improv show on March 1, with special guests from the Central Coast Comedy Theater at the Black Box Theatre.
